OUR PROGRAM

Horsin' Around was established in 2000 that provides horseback riding activities and in some cases combined physical and speech therapy to special needs children and adults. Our Horsin’ Around family consists of persons with a wide variety of special needs and medical conditions ranging from cerebral palsy, spinal bifida, muscular dystrophy, traumatic brain injuries and developmental disabilities such as autism, ADHD, and more. There is always a waiting list as the needs are great for this kind of therapy. Our mission is “to enhance the development, both physically and mentally of special needs individuals utilizing the unique assets provided by horseback riding and human interaction.”

We are a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization. All of our funds come through donations, grants and fund raising activities. All of our riders participate at no charge. Additionally Horsin' Around is now affiliated with the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association as a NARHA Member Center.

Benefits of Therapuetic Riding

Therapeutic Riding, also known as Equine Assisted Therapy is the use of a horse to achieve a variety of therapeutic goals which may include cognitive, physical , emotional, social , educational or behavioral goals. It is recognized as one of the more progressive forms of therapy. Two categories of riding have evolved over the years: Hippo therapy and Therapeutic Riding. While there is some overlap, Hippo therapy is a medical treatment in which a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or Speech Therapist works with a person on the horse to achieve functional goals. With Therapeutic Riding the goal is to improve the balance, strength and stamina along with specific riding skills.

Whether riding with a Physical Therapist or a certified instructor, the key player is the horse. A horse’s movement is rhythmic, repetitive and multidimensional and mimics the human gait. The ideal horse needs to be sound, strong, and healthy with a good temperament.

Research shows that individuals who participate in equine assisted therapies and activities can experience physical, emotional and mental rewards- and more.
